Texas Lutheran, Texas-Tyler Picked to Repeat ASC Division Titles

RICHARDSON, Texas –– Texas Lutheran University and the University of Texas at Tyler have been predicted to repeat their American Southwest Conference West and East Division baseball titles, respectively, in 2008 after a vote of each the division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, the conference office announced on Tuesday.

Three-time defending ASC champion Texas Lutheran, coming off a 37-10-1 season (17-3 in ASC West play) in which it also reached a third straight NCAA Division III Baseball Championship West Regional, totaled 155 points and picked up 11 of a possible 20 first-place votes in the annual poll. TLU batted .338 as a team in 2007 and posted an ERA of 3.89. It led the ASC in stolen bases with 71. The Bulldogs are under the direction of first-year head coach Greg Burnett, who spent nine seasons under the now retired Bill Miller.

McMurry University (29-17, 14-7 ASC), which reached the ASC title game last season, was nine points behind TLU in the poll and garnered seven first-place votes to come in second. Hardin-Simmons University (111 pts.) was picked third, followed by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (106 pts.) to round out what would be the West Division’s four teams to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament.

Concordia University Texas (94 pts.) picked up a first-place vote and came in fifth, followed by Howard Payne University (61 pts.), Schreiner University (60 pts.) and Sul Ross State University (23 pts.). Schreiner landed the final two top-spot votes.

Texas-Tyler, fresh off a 37-1 season (17-1 in ASC East play) which set a new conference winning percentage record of .974 and tied the most wins mark, received 128 points in the poll and all but three of 19 possible first-place votes. Head coach James Vilade’s Patriots, who have won two of the last three ASC East titles, become eligible for postseason play after serving as an NCAA provisional the last four seasons. Texas-Tyler led the ASC in batting average (.366), team ERA (2.68) and fielding percentage (.968) in 2007.

The University of Texas at Dallas (34-13, 14-1 ASC), which advanced to the first NCAA West Regional in program history and hosted the championship round of ASC tournament last season, was picked to finish second with 102 points and two first-place votes. Mississippi College (98 pts.) landed the last top-spot vote and was the third place choice, followed by University of the Ozarks (73 pts.) to round out what would be the East’s four teams to qualify for the ASC tournament.

Louisiana College (62 pts.) came in fifth, followed by East Texas Baptist University (48 pts) and LeTourneau University (21 pts).

Texas Lutheran and Texas-Tyler are both ranked nationally in preseason polls by Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA-D3baseball.com. Texas-Dallas is receiving votes in both.

ASC baseball teams may begin the 2008 season as early as February 1 and division play starts March 7. The conference championship tournament’s first round is set for April 25-26 at the site of each division’s top 2 seeds with the championship round going May 2-4 at the West Division No. 1 seed. The winner receives an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.

Texas-Tyler’s Fox, Campbell, McMurry’s Voorhees, TLU’s Hull Take ASC Preseason Individual Honors

RICHARDSON, Texas –– The University of Texas at Tyler duo of shortstop Kendall Fox and right-handed starting pitcher Ryan Campbell, along with McMurry University first baseman Brent Voorhees and Texas Lutheran University right-handed pitcher Logan Hull, have received 2008 American Southwest Conference baseball preseason individual honors after a vote of each division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, the ASC office announced on Tuesday.

Fox (Carrollton, TX / Creekview HS), a junior, was named East Division Preseason Player of the Year, while Campbell (Tomball, TX / Klein Oak HS/ Panola CC), a senior, was tabbed East Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Fox led the ASC with a .452 batting average and .612 on-base percentage last season. He also walked a league-high 48 times, scored 65 runs and went 11-for-11 on stolen base attempts. Campbell went 8-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 2007. His win total was tied for the second-highest in the league and he was one of three starters not to surrender a home run. He walked just nine batters in 72 1/3 innings of work.

Both combined to help the Patriots to a 37-1 record and the East Division championship.

Voorhees (Abilene, TX / Wylie HS), a senior, was voted West Division Preseason Player of the Year. He batted .368 with a league-leading 14 home runs in 2007. Voorhees, who also picked up three saves on the mound, drove in 56 runs and walked 32 times. His RBI total was third-best in the ASC and he also helped McMurry reach the ASC championship game.

Hull (Victoria, TX / Memorial HS), a sophomore, was the choice to be West Division Preseason Pitcher of the Year. In 2007, he went 7-2 with one save and compiled a 3.54 ERA to help guide the Bulldogs to their third straight ASC title. Hull, whose win total tied him for third in the league, hurled two complete-game shutouts in 10 starts.

Fox, Campbell and Voorhees were American Baseball Coaches Association All-West Region picks last season. Voorhees was a D3baseball.com All-American. Voorhees and Hull were members of the ASC All-Tournament Team.
