First Round Series Set
for 2008 American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship Tournament

RICHARDSON, Texas –– McMurry University, Concordia University Texas, the University of Texas at Tyler and Mississippi College will each serve as first round hosts of the 2008 American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship Tournament Series, to be held April 25-26, after locking up one of the top two seeds from their respective divisions.
The winners from the four, best-of-3 series (also featuring the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons University, the University of the Ozarks and Louisiana College) will advance to the championship round, a double elimination format to be held May 2-4 at the site of the top remaining West Division seed. The ASC champion will earn the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.
For the first time in the 12-year history of the tournament, live statistics and live audio will be available for all first round games. They can be linked to from the conference’s website, www.ASCsports.org, and the athletics websites of all host institutions.
The ASC West Division produced a four-way tie for the title, but it was McMurry (24-16) that emerged as the division’s top seed through the ASC’ Tie-Breaker Procedure. Head coach Lee Driggers’ club will host East Division No. 4 seed Louisiana College (16-24) at Driggers Field in Abilene, Texas. Game 1 is set for 2 p.m. Friday, with Game 2’s first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. If necessary, Game 3 will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game 2. McMurry is a three-time ASC champion (1998, 2001 and 2004).
Concordia Texas (26-13) earned the West’s No. 2 seed and will host East third seed and nationally-ranked Ozarks (31-9) at Keller-Faszholz Field in Austin, Texas. Game 1 is set for a 7 p.m. start on Friday, with Game 2 coming a 1 p.m. on Saturday. If necessary, Game 3 will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game 2. Head coach Mike Gardner’s CTX Tornados won the ASC crown in 2002.
Nationally-ranked Texas-Tyler (33-7) won the East Division for the third time in the past four seasons and earned the right to host a first-round series with West No. 4 seed Hardin-Simmons (26-14). Game 1’s first pitch is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Irwin Field in Tyler, Texas. Game 2 will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with an if necessary Game 3 starting 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game 2. Head coach James Vilade’s UTT Patriots are in their first season eligible for postseason play after serving the past four years as an NCAA provisional.
Head coach Brian Owens and Mississippi College (22-17) won its final game of the season to secure the East’s No. 2 seed and the right to host West No. 3 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor (28-10) in the first round at Frierson Field in Clinton, Miss. Game 1 is set for a 6 p.m. start on Friday, while Game 2’s first pitch will come at 1 p.m. Saturday. If necessary, Game 3 will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of Game 2. MC won the ASC title in 2003.
Texas Lutheran University finished in fifth place in the West Division, missing out on the ASC tournament by one spot. The Bulldogs have won the past three ASC championships.
