Defiance College Baseball Team Takes Time Away from Diamond to Impact Community
Nov 27, 2009
The Defiance College baseball team recently teamed up with Johns Mansville, LaFarge Corporation, Environmental Recycling Group of Bowling Green, Phillips Services Corporation and the Defiance County Environmental Services Office to help dispose of thousands of pounds of hazardous waste materials.
The 2009 project marked the third-straight year that the DC baseball team has supported this endeavor as part of the school’s ongoing focus of service and engagement. This particular project allowed the residents in and around the Defiance community to have a safe and convenient way to dispose of household hazardous waste items.
This year a total of 379 vehicles were unloaded, with a total of 26,246 pounds of hazardous waste being processed on October 24. Products were dropped off by citizens from the counties of Defiance, Paulding, Fulton, Williams and Henry and included nearly 6,500 pounds of televisions, over 2,500 flammable containers, 3,500 paint containers and nearly 1,500 pounds of lead acid batteries.
The DC baseball team accounted for 40 of the 45 volunteers on site during the four-hour event and chipped in over 150 total volunteer hours to make the day a resounding success. This is not out of the ordinary for Defiance College, where student-athletes have logged more than 5,000 hours of service in and around the Defiance community over the past two years.
