LEHMAN BASEBALL FALLS IN FIRST CUNYAC PLAYOFF GAME SINCE 2003
May 08, 2008
Press Release posted by Lehman Permalink
The Lehman College men’s baseball team fell in their opening game of the 2008 CUNYAC Postseason Championship Tournament, falling to the No. 1 seeded College of Staten Island Dolphins, 9-5, in a nine-inning contest earlier this evening at the tournament’s host site, the CSI Baseball Complex. The Lightning fell to 18-15 overall on the 2008 campaign while the Dolphins improved to a mark of 19-18.

The Lightning struck first in the contest, plating a run against CSI starter Pat Gale. Speedster Jhonny Reyes started things off with a single, and Luis Alicea followed with a basehit to left field. After Gale settled down to record the next two outs, he walked the following batter before walking Matthew Arvelo to force home a run. After a half an inning of play, Lehman led 1-0.

The lead was short-lived for the Lightning, as the Dolphins would score five runs in their half of the first frame. CSI's first four batters recorded hits against Lehman starter Emmanuel Vera, as Andrew Baio brought in Anthony Piccirillo to tie the game at one apiece. After an RBI by Pat Gale plated Mohamed Hamad, Ray Valerio then followed with an RBI-triple, one of two on the day. A Lehman miscue would account for CSI's fifth run of the contest, as the Dolphins grabbed a 5-1 lead after an inning of play.

Both starters would then settle down, as both pitchers kept the opposition’s offense at bay over the following two innings. In the fourth, the Dolphins would tack on another run thanks to Devon DiCasoli’s RBI single that brought in Ray Valerio. CSI would increase its lead to 8-2 in the sixth inning to take a six-run lead heading into the final three innings of the contest.

The Lightning would then show signs of life in the top of the seventh inning. After loading the bases against Gale, the Dolphins made a pitching change, bringing in right-hander Stephen Mojica. Following Mojica’s entrance, Lehman was able to pick up two runs via a Gilbert Garcia two-RBI single. After six and a half, CSI led 8-4.

The Lightning scratched another run in the eighth thanks to a Reyes RBI-single, but the Dolphins would get that run back in their half of the eighth, aided by another pair of Lightning misuces. Down to their final three outs, the Lightning went down in order, dropping the contest

CSI’s Pat Gale earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing four runs on five hits, fanning seven. Vera went the distance for Lehman, allowing nine runs (six earned) on 11 hits, walking none and fanning five.

Offensively for the Lightning, Luis Alicea finished the contest 2-for-5 with an RBI while Jose Garrido was 2-for-4 with a run scored. For CSI, it was Ray Valerio finishing 3-for-4 at the plate, notching a pair of triples and an RBI while denting home plate three times.

Lehman will play the loser of Mitchell vs. John Jay tomorrow afternoon at 1pm, while the winner of that game will face Staten Island at 4pm.
