Apr 22, 2007
Press Release posted by Mass-Boston Permalink
WALTHAM, MA – Senior left-handed pitcher Jaime Soto (Peabody, MA) scattered 10 hits and allowed three runs in a complete game victory, while collecting three hits and knocking in a pair of runs to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston baseball team over visiting University of Southern Maine, 5-3, today in a Little East Conference game at Yetten Field in Waltham, MA. The Beacons fall improve to 11-13 overall and 2-7 in LEC play, while the Huskies, who are ranked fourth in the New England region, fall to 17-7 and 6-3.

Soto threw nine innings, while walking four and striking out seven to improve to 2-3 on the season.

UMass Boston led for the first five innings of the contest until Southern Maine senior right fielder Ryan Bourque (Sanford, ME) smacked a one-out single to right field, moved to third on a single to center field by senior Max Arsenault (Boothbay, ME) and scored on a single to left center field by sophomore starting pitcher Chris Burleson (Portland, ME) to knot the game at 3-3.

The Beacons answered in the bottom of the frame when sophomore left fielder Chris Oram (Lynn, ME) doubled to center field and came around to score on a single to left field by freshman catcher Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL) to give them a 4-3 edge, a lead they would not relinquish. UMass Boston added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when senior right fielder Sean Ketterer (Plymouth, MA) took first base after being hit with a pitch, for the second time on the day, with one out and Soto followed with a booming shot to left center field to score Ketterer to make it 5-3, but Soto was thrown out at third in a bid for his second triple of the season.

The Beacons wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning when senior center fielder Bob Kniffen (Halifax, MA) tattooed the first pitch he saw up the middle for a single and was later followed by a walk issued to senior shortstop Bryan Curran (Brockton, MA) and Ketterer being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Soto took advantage with a single that found its way into right field to bring home Kniffen and give UMB a 1-0 edge. Junior third baseman Mike Dorval (Belchertown, MA) forced in the second run after being issued a bases on balls.

The Huskies cut the deficit in half in the third inning when freshman Josh Mackey (Danvers, MA) stroked a two-out single to right field and Bourque followed with a run-scoring double to right field to pull them to within 2-1. UMass Boston countered in the bottom of the inning when Soto led off with a single to left field, moved to second on a ground out and scored on an RBI single to left center field by freshman first baseman Mike Andriano (Massapequa, NY) to give the Beacons a 3-1 margin.

Southern Maine made it a one-run game again in the fourth when Arsenault cracked a leadoff single to left field and freshman first baseman Collin Henry (Penobscot, ME) followed with a single to right field to put runners on the corners with no outs. Following a strikeout, junior center fielder Eddie Skeffington (Everett, MA) beat out a double-play ball as Arsenault scampered home to make it 3-2, before the Huskies tied it in the sixth.

Soto finished his day going 3-4 with a double and two runs batted in and a run scored at the plate for the Beacons, while Andriano and Rodriguez each went 2-4 with an RBI. Kniffen also collected two hits for UMB. Mackey, Bourque, Arsenault and Henry all came up with two hits for Southern Maine, with Bourque knocking in a run and scoring once.

Burleson took the loss for the Huskies going seven innings and allowing five earned runs on eight hits and five walks, while fanning two batters.

UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, April 24 when it travels to Quincy, MA to take on Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m., while Southern Maine hosts Colby College on April 23 at 4:00 p.m.
