Montclair State, Rutgers-Camden Split NJAC Doubleheader

Little Falls, NJ (4/7/07) – Freshman shortstop Dennis O’Hanlan (Riverside, NJ/Riverside) drove in three runs in the opener to back a solid outing by Damien Wright (Millville, NJ/Millville) for Rutgers-Camden in the opener while Montclair State senior Rob Bowness (Sparta, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) went 5-for-6 with four RBI in the nightcap as the Scarlet Raptors and Red Hawks split an NJAC doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.
Rutgers-Camden (10-13, 1-6 NJAC) took the first game 5-2 behind an 8 1/3 inning performance from Wright before Montclair State (11-11, 4-3 NJAC) pounded out 23 hits in the second en route to a 26-8 victory.
Wright picked up his first collegiate win as he allowed just two hits and two unearned runs. The righthander overcame seven walks and struck out three before Adam Sanchez (Leonminster, MA/Worcester Academy) got the final two outs to preserve the win for the Raptors. Jairo Mendez (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) took the loss for the Red Hawks as he gave up four runs (one earned) and nine hits in six innings. Mendez (0-3) fannd five and walked one.
Rutgers-Camden picked up an unearned run in the third inning as Dean Straga (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on an error. O’Hanlan extended the lead in the fifth with an RBI single and pushed the lead to 4-0 the following inning with a two-run single. Mark Wickersham (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) made it 5-0 in the top of the ninth with an RBI single.
Montclair State would get two runs across in the ninth as it loaded the bases with one out. Thomas Meyer (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly and Ed Kloepping (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) added an RBI single to make the score 5-2. But Sanchez was able to get the final batter on a flyout.
O’Hanlan had three hits for Rutgers-Camden while Wickersham, Vince Giunta (Sewell, NJ/Clearview) and Steve Myers (Millville, NJ/Millville) each collected two hits.
After managing just three hits in Game 1, the Red Hawks jumped out quickly in the second game with three runs in the first. Bowness and Andrew Vicaro (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) both scored on wild pitches before Lou Politan (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) smacked an RBI single. The lead grew to 7-0 in the second as Michael Nunes (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) reached on an error and scored on the third of the Raptors’ six wild pitches in the game. Kloepping collected a sacrifice fly and Andrew Himmelfarb (Nyack, NY/Nyack) delivered an RBI single to complete the four-run inning.
Rutgers-Camden would cut the lead to 7-4 in the third as O’Hanlan had an RBI single and Mike Morris (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) doubled home two runs. After MSU pushed the lead back to 9-4, the Raptors scored four times in the fifth to pull within 9-8. The Red Hawks then blew the game open in the bottom of the inning scoring 10 times while sending 14 batters to the plate. Marc Palestina (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) started things off with a two-run single and Himmelfarb added an RBI double to make the score 12-8. Bowness belted a two-run homer, his third of the year and Politan a two-run double as MSU had nine hits in the inning.
Bowness, who fell a double short of the cycle, had a two-run single in the eighth as Montclair capped its scoring barrage with a seven-run eighth inning. He tied an MSU single-game record with five runs scored.
Junior lefthander Enrique Gomez (Edison, NJ/St. Joseph’s) picked up the win in relief as he threw three scoreless innings allowing one hits and striking out one. Gomez is now 3-1 on the season. Andrew Lihotz (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) took the loss to fall to 1-2.
Politan finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI while Himmelfarb went 3-for-6. Catcher Jeff Miller (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) was also 3-for-6 with three runs scored and Palestina, Joseph Zembryski (Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter’s Prep) and Rob Clark (Livingston, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) each had two hits.
Montclair State returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 as the Red Hawks travel to Center Valley, PA to face DeSales University at 3:30 pm. Rutgers-Camden is back home on Monday, April 9 for a doubleheader with Catholic University.
