STANDISH, ME – St. Joe’s Baseball Head Coach Will Sanborn ’86 has announced the addition of two former standout players to his coaching staff.
Keil Martin ’07 (Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) and Andrew Wood ’08 (South Portland, ME), both four-year players under Coach Sanborn, will add plenty of college playing experience, as well as a complete understanding of the “Monks Baseball Way,” to the table. Combined, the pair played a total of 209 games while donning the Royal Blue.
Martin and Wood join an experienced staff under Coach Sanborn (18th season) that includes Corey McCarthy (6th season), Nick Mirabello ’03 (3rd season) and Rod Choroszy (2nd season).
Martin comes back to Larry Mahaney Diamond after serving as a member of the Thornton Academy coaching staff for the last two years. In his career, he hit .324 (100-309) with 84 runs as an outfielder for the Monks and garnered All-NAC First Team honors as a senior after hitting .343 (46-134) with 38 runs in his final season. Coach Martin, a captain his senior year at St. Joe’s, will serve as the Monks Junior Varsity Head Coach and will also assist Coach Sanborn with outfield play and hitting fundamentals for the varsity squad.
“Coach Martin adds not only knowledge and experience to our staff, but also an unparalleled level of energy and passion for the game of baseball,” adds Coach Sanborn. “I have no doubt that his outstanding work ethic and drive will rub off on our players.”
Wood returns to the Shores of Sebago after working as an assistant at Southern Maine Community College for the last year-and-a-half. He hit .343 (95-277) with 58 runs and 49 RBI’s in his career and, as a catcher, was revered as one of the team’s top game-callers behind the dish. Wood enjoyed fine sophomore and junior seasons, as he hit .375 (27-72) in 2006 and .367 (40-109) in 2007 and earned All-Conference nominations both years. Coach Wood will work primarily with the catching corps and will also work with the Monks’ hitters.
“Coach Wood possesses an innate understanding of the game,” says Coach Sanborn. “To have someone of his caliber working with the catchers is a luxury not many DIII programs can boast.”
Saint Joseph’s has notched four 30-win seasons and four conference titles and made three NCAA DIII Regional Tournament appearances in the last five years. Head Coach Will Sanborn ’86, 436-260-6 in his career, is one of the most successful coaches in the region and has guided the Monks to 14 titles while four Coach of the Year honors.
The Monks will kick off the 2010 campaign with a trip to Winter Haven, Florida March 7-13. St. Joe’s will play nine games on the southern swing and the detailed schedule will be released in January.
