The University of Texas at Tyler got 24 hits in the double-header Saturday against #29 UT Dallas, winning both games 9-5 and 11-8. The Patriots are still undefeated at 30-0, and 12-0 in the ASC East. Their thirty games won matches the Patriots all-time mark for wins in a season.
Game One: UT Tyler 9, #29 UT Dallas 5
The Patriots scored runs in the second and third inning, with RBI for Kendall Fox (SO/Carrollton, TX) and Michael Caggiano (FR/Sugarland, TX), but lost the lead 5-3 after a five-run outburst from the Comets in the third.
UT Tyler rallied in the fourth, however. Fox led off being hit by a pitch, then Clay Copeland (SR/White Oak, TX) reached on an error. Two batters later, Andrew Damewood (JR/Plano, TX) singled to drive in both runners. Joseph Towns (SO/Carrollton, TX) then bunted his way on base, and catcher Zach James (SR/Palestine, TX) drove in both of them with a double to left field.
The Patriots would add insurance runs in the final two innings, winning 9-5. Damewood went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI, James was 2-for-5 with two doubles, a run, and three RBI.
Brett Holland (SO/Lindale, TX) got the start on the mound, lasting three-and-a-third innings. After Greg Johnson (R/Waco, TX) finished the fourth, Patrick McClure (SR/Hillsboro, TX) threw a no-hitter for the next two innings to get the win.
Game Two: UT Tyler 11, #29 UT Dallas 8
In the second game, the Patriots led early. Fox led off the game by being hit with a pitch, then scored. In the second, Chris Goss (JR/Waco, TX) singled in James, who had reached on an error.
For UT Tyler, the big inning came in the fourth. Leading 2-0 with one out, Austin Newell (FR/Kennedale, TX) walked, then Goss singled him to third. Newell would then score on a balk. After Copeland gained first on a walk, Brett Amyx (SR/Coppell, TX) drove a three-run homer to left to complete the four-run inning.
The Comets would chase the Patriots from that point, but UT Tyler would hold on for the lead. Amyx and Damewood would each have three RBI in the game.
Blake Booher (SO/Hurst, TX) worked six-and-a-third innings, giving up eight hits and six runs, five of them earned. Greg Johnson and Blake Burnett (SR/Bremond, TX) would close out the game.
The Patriots have eight games remaining in the season, and play at home next against Jarvis Christian College. That game will be Tuesday night at six at Irwin Field.
