Leopards, Hawks Split Twinbill
Apr 07, 2007
Press Release posted by Wentworth Tech Permalink
BRISTOL, R.I. – Freshman Pete Oggeri (Sandy Hook, Conn.) stole home with two outs in the home half of the eighth inning as the Wentworth baseball team knocked Roger Williams from the ranks of the unbeaten in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 3-2 win in the first game of a conference doubleheader. The Hawks got a solid pitching performance from junior Mike Malcolm (Brockton, Mass.) to avoid the split, taking the nightcap by a 5-1 final.

With temperatures at game time (37 degrees) more suited for football, the Leopards drew first blood, scoring a pair of runs in the home half of the second inning. Sophomore Phil Costello (Medford, Mass.) led off with a single to right and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt from freshman Chris Carbone (Goshen, Conn.). Twin brother Anthony would plate Costello with a single down the right field line and would later score on a RBI single to right center from sophomore Mike Roberts (Chelmsford, Mass.).

Roger Williams got one back in the top of the third inning when sophomore Jamie Dahill (South Boston, Mass.) hit a two-out, RBI single to right field, which scored classmate Tim Atwood (Gorham, Maine). The Hawks would tie the game in the sixth inning when senior Adam Dackers (Brockton, Mass.) reached on a fielding error with one out and made it to third on a botched pickoff attempt. After sophomore Alex Perry (Glastonbury, Conn.) walked, sophomore Kevin Simpson (Londonderry, N.H.) hit a single up the middle to plate Malcolm, who had come on to pinch run. Perry and Simpson stole third and second, respectively, but Wentworth freshman Chris Sandini (Upton, Mass.) ended the inning with a strikeout and a popup.

The Hawks had an ideal situation to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning, as, with two outs, freshman Ryan MacCarthy (Middletown, Mass.) hit a single through the right side, which was followed by Dahill hitting a single to almost the same spot. Sophomore Brian Hurld (South Boston, Mass.) hit a single to center, and with MacCarthy attempting to score from second, Roberts fired a one-hop strike to Oggeri, who laid the tag on MacCarthy, ending the inning.

After a strikeout to open the home half of the seventh inning, Anthony Carbone laced a single to left, which broke up a string of 14 consecutive batters set down by sophomore James Lydon (Calverton, N.Y.). Anthony Carbone was replaced by senior Brent Grenier (Oxford, Maine), who was moved to second on a sacrifice from freshman Matt Dannenhoffer (Bethany, Conn.), however Lydon induced a popup to end the seventh inning.

Sandini, who pitched seven strong innings, was replaced by sophomore Matt Chymbor (Meriden, Conn.), who walked and hit the first two batters he faced. He was bailed out when Oggeri gunned down Perry, who tried to steal third, and then got the next two batters to strike out and pop out. After Roberts grounded out to open the last of the eighth, Oggeri hit a popup to the left side, which was dropped. He would steal second base as junior Jarrett Ament (Boylston, Mass.) struck out, and stole third while sophomore Nick Cunningham (Pembroke, Mass.) was at the plate. Oggeri would then get a good jump at third and eluded the tag at the plate, giving Wentworth a 3-2 win.

Chymbor upped his record to 2-0 with a scoreless eighth inning, where he walked a batter, hit a batter, and struck out a batter. Sandini would get a no decision, however it marked the first time in his four starts that Wentworth scored a run for him. In seven innings, he allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and walked two batters, while striking out seven. At the plate, Anthony Carbone was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Lydon earned his first loss of the season (4-1), allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 7.2 innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Dahill led the Hawks’ offense with a pair of hits and a run batted in.

After Roger Williams opened the first inning of the second game by leaving a runner on first, Oggeri led off the home half of the inning and was hit by a pitch. He was thrown out trying to steal second, ending his streak of 11 consecutive stolen bases to begin his career.

The Hawks would tally their first run of the game in the second inning when Hurld led off with a double to center. He was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Andrew Haycock (Medfield, Mass.) and scored when classmate Bill Lambert (Hanover, Mass.) reached on an error. Lambert was thrown out trying to take second base, which was followed by an inning-ending groundout.

Roger Williams increased its lead to 2-0 in the top of the fourth when Haycock singled in Perry, who had led off the inning with a walk. After Lambert walked, both runners were stranded to end the inning. Wentworth would get what proved to be its only run of the game in the bottom of the inning as Cunningham led off with a double to right center and scored on a two-out single from Anthony Carbone.

In the top of the sixth inning, Perry led off with a walk and moved to second on an infield single by Simpson. Both runners would move up a base on a sacrifice bunt from Hurld, and Perry would score on a wild pitch, giving Roger Williams a 3-1 lead. The Leopards would attempt to mount a comeback, as Costello drew a one-out walk, and, after a flyout, Anthony Carbone walked to place runners on first and second. Junior Bobby Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) was brought in to relieve Malcolm and got the inning to end on a one-pitch groundout.

Chymbor replaced freshman Scott Borges (Westport, Mass.) to start the seventh and gave up a one-out single to MacCarthy, who moved to third when Dahill’s sacrifice attempt was misplayed. Atwood followed with an RBI single to right center, scoring MacCarthy, and, after a flyout, Simpson singled up the middle to score Dahill. Chymbor got Hurld to fly out in foul territory, but not after Roger Williams had increased its lead to 5-1.

The Leopards had no answers for Criscuolo, who set Wentworth down in order in the last of the seventh to end the game.

Malcolm picked up his first win of the season (1-3) by allowing one run on three hits, walking four, and striking out seven over 5.2 innings. Criscuolo picked up his first save of the season by setting down all four batters he faced. Offensively, Atwood and Simpson each had a pair of hits, while Perry scored a pair of runs.

Borges saw his record drop to 1-3 after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits, while walking four and striking out four. Chymbor allowed a pair of runs (one earned) on three hits, with one strikeout in the seventh inning. Anthony Carbone was 1-for-1 with a pair of walks and an RBI.

Roger Williams sees its record stand at 10-11 overall and 5-1 in league play. The Hawks are back in action Thursday, as they travel to Eastern Connecticut, for a non-league game. Wentworth is currently 5-10 overall (2-4 CCC) and hosts Nichols in a league doubleheader on Monday at 1:30 p.m., at Stonehill College.
