Westfield State (Mass.) College seniors Ben Wagner, Jeff Fields, Mike Trachtenberg, Andrew Poliferno, and Jesse Vermeersch have been named baseball team captains for the 2010 season.
"All five student-athletes are what Westfield baseball represents," said veteran head coach Ray Arra. "Each has contributed the last three years to the success of the Owls."
Wagner, an infielder from Cumberland, R.I., has been a three-year all-conference player at three different positions: second base, shortstop and third base. His career batting is .369, including a .407 mark as a freshman. With 160 career hits, Wagner is two hits shy of breaking the college's all-time hits record held by Mike Ciampa, an All-American who played in the Red Sox farm system. Wagner has also scored 112 runs in 115 career games.
An infielder/pitcher from Pittsfield, Fields is a three-year starter and a two-time all-conference selection. Fields batted .333 in 2009 and struck out only 3 times in 126 at bats, ranking 10th in the nation as toughest to strike out.
Mike Trachtenberg (Newton) carries a career .332 batting average and was an all-conference selection as a sophomore. Trachtenberg has been a mainstay in centerfield and has the ability to cover both gaps in the outfield.
Vermeersch, a Hudson Catholic product from Marlboro, has been a three-year starting pitcher and has evolved into the ace of the Owls staff. He has a 13-5 career pitching record.
Andrew Poliferno (Sharon), exemplifies the leadership and qualities of a captain, as well as being a solid contributor on the mound. In last year's MASCAC championship game, he held Worcester State to two runs to catapult the Owls to the NCAA regional tournament.
