NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College baseball team exploded for 32 runs and 38 hits in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader sweep over Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons posted 17-0 and 15-3 victories at Sidell Stadium. The twinbill was originally scheduled to be played in Cambridge but was moved to Wheaton due to unplayable field conditions.

Wheaton, which reached double figures for the sixth and seventh times this spring, has won 11 of its last 12 games. Ranked 10th nationally and first in New England according to the latest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) polls, the Blue and White is now 16-6 overall and tied for first in the NEWMAC at 5-2. MIT dropped to 6-6 and 3-2 with today's setbacks.

Junior Louie Bernardini's (Gray, ME/Gray-New Gloucester) arm and sophomore Karl Olson's (Bethel, ME/Gould Academy) bat put Wheaton in a good position in today's opener, as Bernardini carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning while Olson went 2-for-2 with five RBI and a pair of doubles in his first two plate appearances. Olson's two bagger down the right field line in the third gave the Lyons an 8-0 advantage. Olson later scored on an error, and the hosts added one in each the fourth and fifth frames and six in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Bernardini pitched a perfect three innings before yielding a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth. He ended up retiring 18 of the 21 batters faced, allowing three walks while fanning three and surrendering the lone hit in the seventh. MIT senior Jason Witzberger (Wheeling, WV/The Linsly School) broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single up the middle. Bernardini improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season. Sophomore Chris D'Annunzio (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) suffered the loss after giving up nine runs, three earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 2.2 innings.

Olson was one of six multiple hitters in the game, going 2-for-3 with five RBI, two runs and a walk. Senior Jeff Martin (Marblehead, MA/Marblehead) was 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a walk, while classmate Adam Laplante (Harwich, MA/Harwich) was 3-for-5 with two runs. Sophomore Robert Foote (Walpole, MA/Walpole) batted 2-for-2 with two runs and a sacrifice hit, junior Scott Guillerault (South Portland, ME/South Portland) was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs, a double, walk and sac fly, while senior Travis Anthoine (Portland, ME/Portland) had two hits with a run and stolen base.

Foote and senior Brandon Leonard (Brockton, MA/Brockton) each had four hits during the second game's 22-hit onslaught. The Blue and White took a 4-0 lead after one before combining for eight runs in the fourth and fifth frames for a 12-3 advantage. Wheaton tacked on two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.

Foote finished the game batting 4-for-5 with an RBI, while Leonard went 4-for-6 with three runs, two RBI, a double and a stolen base. Anthoine added a spark from the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI and stolen base. Junior Patrick Moore (Brookline, MA/Brookline) was 2-for-2 with a run, Guillerault went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run, double and sacrifice hit, and sophomore Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ/Immaculata) picked up two hits, two runs and a steal. Junior Jake Yagjian (Brewster, MA/Nauset Regional) plated three runs, freshman Paul Malaguti (Andover, MA/Andover) drove in two, while Martin and Olson each scored twice.

Junior Josh Moore (Manchester, NH/Manchester Memorial) fanned seven and walked one while allowing three earned runs on five hits through six innings for his third win. MIT sophomore Matt Loper (Huntington Beach, CA/Sage Hill) allowed eight runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and a walk in four innings.

Wheaton hosts NEWMAC foe Babson College on Tuesday at Sidell beginning at 3:30 p.m.
