Texas-Tyler Hosts McMurry in ASC First Round

More news about: Texas-Tyler

TYLER -- In what has become a familiar scenario for the American Southwest Conference baseball postseason, The University of Texas at Tyler will host McMurry in the ASC tournament's first round this weekend at Irwin Field. The best 2-of-3 series begins at 6 p.m. Friday.

This will be the third season in a row that the Patriots, the East Division's top seed, will host the War Hawks as the No. 4 seed from the West in the first round.

UT Tyler, currently 33-4 and ranked No. 5 in the nation, will be looking to three-peat as conference champions while McMurry  (15-25) will aim to break their recent hard luck against the Patriots.

The winner of the first round series will advance to next weekend's championship round at the site of the East Division's highest remaining seed.

UT Tyler and McMurry met less than two weeks ago in Tyler where the Patriots scored 5-2 and 7-3 wins in a mid-week doubleheader.

The Patriots head into the tournament as the hottest team in the ASC, holding down the league's top batting average (.333) and best combined ERA (2.61). McMurry, as a team, is hitting .299 and has a 6.21 ERA.

Offensively, the Patriots will be led by the ASC's top hitter – Nick Clifton. Clifton is batting .499 on the season with 48 RBIs, 13 doubles and seven home runs. He also sits atop the league's standings in slugging percentage (.748) and on base percentage (.533). Also pacing the Patriots is Justin Juneau who is hitting .403 with 40 RBIs.

On the mound, UT Tyler starters Chad Sherman, Matt Schimpf and Kory Cleveland all rank in the top 10 in the ASC in ERA.  Sherman tops the list with a 1.35 mark on the season and has eight wins. Schimpf is throwing 2.32 with six wins and Cleveland has seven wins and a 2.57 ERA.

For McMurry, Jake Mullin is the War Hawks' top hitter with a .369 average, while Michael Dibiasi has a 2.01 ERA and a 3-1 record to lead the pitching staff.

Live stats and video for the entire series will be available at www.uttylerpatriots.com.  Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The second game of the series will be played at 2 p.m. Saturday, with the third game immediately following if necessary.
