Peter Zak, Jarrett Gish Propel Spartans to Two Victories Versus Oberlin

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Senior catcher Peter Zak (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) was 3-for-4 with a homerun in the opener and junior pitcher Jarrett Gish (Jupiter, Fla./Suncoast) threw seven innings of one-run baseball in the nightcap as Case Western Reserve University began a weekend quartet of games with a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon at V.A. Memorial Field.

The Spartans (5-1 overall), who defeated Oberlin by scores of 5-2 and 9-1, conclude their weekend series in Chillicothe with a twinbill versus Ohio Wesleyan University tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.

In the opener, the Spartans overtook the Yeomen with a pair of two-run innings in the fifth and sixth.

Zak led the charge with three hits, including his first homer of the spring and sixth of his career, with a solo blast to left center in the bottom of the sixth. Overall, six different Spartans collected one hit apiece.

On the mound, junior left-hander Jamie Hora (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) threw the first six innings to improve to 2-0, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Ray Kelly (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) hurled two innings in relief allowing just one hit before turning the ball over to sophomore Jose Vega (Strongsville, Ohio/Padua Franciscan), who tossed a perfect ninth inning for his third save of the spring.

In the nightcap, the Spartans pounded out 15 hits and scored twice in the first, second and seventh. Junior first baseman Brett Ossola (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) was 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two runs batted-in. Junior shortstop Matt Keen (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) posted two hits in six at-bats, while junior centerfielder Paul Pakan (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) ripped his first homerun in a Spartan uniform in the top of the eighth inning.

Gish took the starting nod on the bump and logged seven innings, surrendering just one run on four hits with six punch-outs and one walk. Sophomore John Fortunato (Toledo, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) and freshman Robert Winemiller (Twinsburg, Ohio/University School) each threw in an inning in relief to close the game.

Following tomorrow's doubleheader versus OWU, the Spartans are idle until the University Athletic Association Championship in Altamonte Springs, Florida from March 11-18.
