BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The fifth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team built a six-run lead before withstanding a late Babson College comeback  in a 10-7 non-conference win at Govoni Field Monday afternoon.

Now 10-4 in games played away from the Eastern Baseball Stadium this season, Eastern (16-5)  upped its northern record to 7-3 with its seventh win against Babson (14-11) in nine meetings in the series.

Eastern scored six runs in the middle innings to move out to a 7-1 lead and after the Beavers got three back in chasing Eastern sophomore starter Greg Porter (Mystic), answered with two more in the top of the seventh on two hit batsmen, a walk, and two-out RBI singles from junior cleanup hitter Joe Balowski (Berlin) and sophomore shortstop Danny O'Connell (Braintree, MA).

Babson pushed across three runs in its final two at-bats against Eastern freshman lefty Matt D'Orsi (West Hartford) and junior righty Drew Accomando (Monroe), but stranded five runners in those last two innings.  In the ninth, the hosts collected four singles, but Accomando  left the go-ahead run at the plate  by fanning the side.

For Eastern, seven different players drove in a run, every starter had at least one hit, and all but one starter scored at least one run. The Warriors had 12 hits and were issued seven walks, and scored four unearned runs thanks to four Babson errors.

Three hits, two walks and an error paved the way for three runs in the fourth that helped the Warriors to a 4-0 lead, and the visitors made it 7-1 with three more in the fifth on a leadoff walk to O'Connell and single by sophomore rightfielder Mike Vaccarelli (Wolcott), and RBIs from freshman second baseman Armando Soler (Hartford),  No. 9 hitter Steve Cammuso (Rutland, MA) and sophomore leftfielder Adam Roderick (West Hartford). Soler reached on an infield single, Cammuso doubled, and leadoff hitter Roderick smacked a sacrifice fly.

Vaccarelli had three hits and sophomore DH Gavin Lavallee (New Milford) had his first two varsity hits.

First-year sophomore lefty Lucas Cimmino (Westfield, MA) was credited with his first win at Eastern in his fourth appearance. He allowed two hits and a run and walked a batter with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings of relief in place of Porter. Porter allowed three runs over four-plus innings (he was lifted after the first three batters of the fifth reached safely), but only one was earned. He fanned three  and walked three.

Eastern hosts Western Connecticut State University Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a Little East Conference game.
