PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior Ryan Henchey stroked a game-winning two-run double down the left field line to propel the Ithaca College baseball team, 4-3, over Elmira College in the opening round of the Empire 8 Conference Championship at Dugan Yard on Thursday. With the win, Ithaca is now 26-11 on the season and moves on to play Stevens Institute of Technology tomorrow afternoon for a trip to the conference final.

The Bombers trailed, 3-2, heading to the bottom of the ninth inning. Senior Josh Savacool, who went 3-for-4 in the game, led off the inning with a single. Sophomore Webb Little followed with a base hit and then senior Trevor Thompson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up. After a free pass to sophomore Sam Little loaded the bases, Henchey ripped the full count offering just inside the left field foul line to send the Bombers to victory.

Henchey went 2-for-4 and drove in three of Ithaca's runs in the win, while W. Little and Thompson both recorded two hits each.

Ithaca got on the board first with an RBI single from Henchey that brought in Savacool in the bottom of the third inning. Savacool led off the frame with a base hit and moved over to third after a single from W. Little and a fly out by Thompson.

The Soaring Eagles took the lead, 2-1, in their half of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and a fielding error. Elmira started things off with back-to-back singles and then a sac bunt moved both runners up to set up the deep sac fly to centerfield. After a walk put runners on the corners, Ithaca's error brought home the second run.

Elmira threatened to add to its lead in the top of the seventh by loading the bases with two outs. Freshman Tom Cosentino came in from the bullpen to replace junior Robby Buffis for the Bombers and induced a ground out to second bases to get out of the jam.

Buffis pitched well for Ithaca as he went 6.2 innings and scattered four hits with two runs allowed (one earned). He also struck out two batters.

Elmira scored another run in the eighth inning to extend its lead to 3-1 on a dropped pop up between the mound and first base with two runners on and two outs. Ithaca retired the first two outs of the inning, but the Soaring Eagles strung together a single and double down the line to put two runners in scoring position, which set up the run on the error.

The Bombers got a run back in the bottom half of the eighth inning on a base hit through the left side by junior Domenic Boresta to push home Henchey, which set up the walk-off win.

Junior Andrew Bailey earned the win for Ithaca in 1.1 innings of relief. Bailey allowed two hits and struck out one. Cosentino tossed one inning and allowed two hits.

The Bombers and Stevens will square off 40 minutes after the conclusion of the St. John Fisher/Elmira elimination game tomorrow, which is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. A win moves Ithaca to the final on Saturday, but a loss forces IC to play the third game slated for Friday against Fisher or Elmira.
