The No. 14 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team earned its sixth Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament title and second in the last three years Saturday on the second and final day of the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's) at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.
The Warhawks (34-10 overall) were topped 10-2 in their first game of the day against UW-La Crosse before downing the Eagles 11-1 in eight innings in the finale to take the title.
In the second game of the day, UW-Whitewater, officially the away team in the box score, mashed 17 hits and took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the first inning.
Senior Jim Perkins (Cary, Ill./Cary-Grove) improved to 2-0 on the season with the win, scattering seven hits and striking out five over six innings of work. Freshman Hayden Fox (Stockton, Ill./Stockton) tossed two shutout frames in relief.
Junior centerfielder Noah Jensen (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) posted three hits, two runs scored and three runs batted in, and senior catcher Mike Aiello (Racine, Wis./Horlick) registered two hits, one run scored and three RBI. Sophomore shortstop Nick Santoro (Naperville, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) collected three hits, one run scored and one RBI, and junior right fielder Alex Doud (Waukesha, Wis./Mukwonago) totaled three hits, one run scored and one RBI.
Senior second baseman Nick Schrader (Cambridge, Wis./Jefferson) tallied two hits and two runs scored, and sophomore designated hitter Connor Moroder (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee) recorded two hits, one run scored and two RBI.
In the first game of the day, the Eagles (28-15) plated five runs in the top of the third and another five in the top of the ninth to run away with a victory.
The Warhawks totaled 11 hits in the contest but left 10 runners on base and committed three errors in the field.
Santoro, Schrader, Jensen and senior first baseman Connor Schneider (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) finished with two hits apiece. UW-Whitewater scored twice in the third inning as Schneider scored on a wild pitch and senior third baseman Cal Aldridge (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) brought home Santoro with a one-out base hit to right center.
Sophomore pitcher Matt O'Sullivan (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) was dealth the loss, falling to 7-4 on the year.
The WIAC currently does not have an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UW-Whitewater will find out Monday at 11 a.m. Central Time during the NCAA Selection Show if they are one of the teams selected to the field. The team is eligible for a Pool "B" bid based on its status as an independent and could receive a Pool "C", or at-large, invitation.
