Trinity Baseball Falls At No. 10-Ranked Wheaton

Norton, Mass. – The visiting Trinity College Bantams lost, 11-5, against the Wheaton College Lyons in baseball action this afternoon at Sidell Stadium. Trinity falls to 14-9 with its first loss in five games, while No. 10-ranked Wheaton improves to 17-6.

Wheaton jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on three hits, one error and one runner left on base. Two runs scored on a throwing error, before senior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H.) added an RBI double down the left field line, sophomore Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass.) ripped a run-producing triple to center field, and sophomore Justin Peluso (North Andover, Mass.) lined an RBI single up the middle to cap the offensive outburst.

Trailing, 8-0, in the middle of the third frame, the Bantams chipped away at the deficit and made it a 10-5 game with solo runs in the third and fourth innings and three more runs in the sixth. Freshman Matthew Mortimer (Worcester, Mass.) highlighted Trinity's offense in the sixth inning with a two-run single up the middle scoring senior captains Joe Papa (Stoneham, Mass.) and Michael Rueger (Teaneck, N.J.). Classmate Evan Sternberg (Glen Ridge, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded producing the final run of the frame.

Senior right-handed pitcher Corey Laliberte (Fall River, Mass./B.M.C. Durfee) scattered seven hits over five innings, yielded two runs (both earned), walked four and struck out one batter. Trinity sophomore left-hander Robert Gau (Westport, Conn./Staples) took the loss, and sophomore righty Paul Carbone (North Wales, Pa.) provided three innings of scoreless relief. Bantam seniors Alex Almeida (Bridgeport, Conn.), Papa, and captain Stephen Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) each had two hits.
