The LeTourneau University scored twice in the ninth in extra innings in game one and pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap to complete a 3-1 (nine innings) and 5-0 sweep of the University of Texas-Dallas on Saturday in Richardson.
With the game tied at 1, in the ninth, LeTourneau senior Bryce Griffin doubled down the left-field line to score Chris Bertram and Micah Montes. To start the inning, Chris Bertram and Montes reached on singles, who moved to second and third on a Quinn Brankin sacrifice bunt.
With one out, the YellowJackets attempted a squeeze play but the Comets got the runner out at the plate to set the stage for Griffin, who delivered his 13th two-out hit of the season for the 3-1 lead.
Earlier in the game, in the seventh, LeTourneau took a 1-0 lead after a miscue by UTD when they misplayed a ground ball hit by Micah Montes. In the Comets' half of the inning, with one out, UTD tied the game after LeTourneau misplayed the ball on a pair of plays. With the game-winning runs on second and third, Price ended the threat with a pop out and a ground out.
Reliever Kirby Cantalamessa retired UTD in order to close out the ninth for his second save of the season for LeTourneau. Jordan Price, who came in to pitch in relief of Cody Whitley, shut down the Comets in 2.1 innings of work to pick up his third win of the season. Offensively for LeTourneau, Griffin and Pritchett each went 2-for-4 to lead a hit-attack.
Feeding off the momentum of the first game win, LeTourneau pieced together13 hits for a 5-0 shutout win by Justin Jenkins to complete the doubleheader sweep as well as the series victory.
Ryan Bertram went 4-for-4 to pace the 13-hit attack with a pair of RBI doubles. He was joined in the offensive parade by Dillon Yates, Landon Methvin and Bryce Henry, who each had RBI singles.
Defensively, Jenkins reaped the benefits of three double plays for his first shutout of the season and the complete game. In addition to the three defensive plays, it was alert defensive plays throughout the contest that preserved the shutout for the YellowJackets.
LeTourneau returns to Longview to host Hardin-Simmons University in a three-game series that gets underway on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Conrad-Vernon Field.
