North Central Picked to Defend Fifth-Straight CCIW Title

Feb. 13, 2019 – In the annual poll of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) head baseball coaches, the North Central College baseball team was selected to repeat as conference champions for the fifth consecutive season, released by the conference on Wednesday.

Winners of the last four CCIW regular season titles and the seventh overall for head coach Ed Mathey, the Cardinals finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 29-14, while posting a 20-4 record in CCIW play.  Over the last four seasons the Cardinals are a staggering 67-23 (.744) in conference play, led by 23 All-CCIW selections and five CCIW Player of the Year awards.

North Central was selected atop this year's preseason poll receiving 60 points and five of the nine first-place votes.  2018 conference runner-up Carthage College was picked second with 56 points and two first-place votes, while Augustana College rounds out the top-three scoring 47 points and one first-place vote.

Illinois Wesleyan University came in fourth with 43 points, followed by North Park University in fifth with 35, Wheaton College in sixth with 30 points and the final first-place vote.  Millikin was selected seventh with 26 points, while Elmhurst College (17 points) and Carroll University (10 points) close out the poll.

Beginning the 2019 season with a pair of games on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Carbondale, Ill., the Cardinals play host to Wilmington College (Ohio) at 11 a.m., followed by the University of Dallas (Texas) at 5 p.m. inside Itchy Jones Stadium.
